Normal Life of A 21 year old Female Indian Brahmin - Part 4

“Trisha can’t you drive faster we need to reach RMKV before your mom-in-law does”

“Mom can’t you see it’s almost jam packed and I refuse to drive like the auto guys, We will get there when we do. Anyway it’s been 2 and half weeks since we started shopping for sarees, nothing will happen if we go late one day”

After 15 minutes.

“Finally here! Trisha call your mom-in-law and let her know we are here”

Trisha dials the number.

“Hello Aunt…. Amma, we are here”

Trisha hangs up the phone.

“Amma we have to go to the 3rd floor”

They walk in and find loads and loads of people.

“Why are people shopping all the time? it’s a Thursday for god’s sake”

“It’s the season of marriages, of course its crowded, the lifts are full and I have to walk 3 floors”

“Amma haven’t I asked you to come and walk with me everyday. It will keep you fit”

“Well I have 101 things to do. Once I get you married I will walk all I want”

Just then!

“Trisha, it’s so good to see you”

“Hi Amma, Sorry we got stuck in the traffic”

“That’s OK. We got some shopping done for our relative, BTW meet Amrutha, my best friend’s daughter and Krishna’s childhood friend. They were our neighbors when we lived in Bombay

“Amrutha, this is Trisha, Krishna’s fiancée and her mom”

“Hi Amrutha, Nice to meet you”

“Hi Trisha, I have been waiting so long to meet you but I  had loads of work and no holidays, hello Aunty, How are you?”

“Hi Amrutha, I am fine, Mrs. Anand keeps talking about you all the time. You look so beautiful; didn’t your parents come for the wedding?”

“No Aunty, My brother has his 12Th exams coming up and he needs her there. Dad will come a day before the wedding”

“So can we start looking for sarees, we have to buy one more saree for Trisha”

“Yes I have to buy a saree for Amrutha and a few of my relatives, OK lets begin looking”

After 2 hours when Trisha and Amrutha had picked their sarees.

“Mrs. Anand , do you mind if I steal Trisha from you for the rest of the afternoon. I am getting bored and am sure she is. Trisha and I will go to some restaurant and have a chat”

“I think it’s a good idea. Mrs. Srija is it OK with you?”

“Sure I don’t mind, Trisha why don’t you take our car, I will take an auto home”

“OK Mom, bye, Bye Amma”

“Bye”

Waiting for her car to be brought by the valet guy, Trisha wonders. How come he has a childhood friend he never mentioned about? Weird!

“That’s my car, let’s go”

“Let’s go to some where quiet and nice”

“Let’s go to barista, It’s a nice place”

“Wherever, it’s your city”

They go into barista and find a nice and quiet corner. They place an order and begin talking.

“So, what do you do Amrutha?”

“I work for Microsoft in Hyderabad. But have an admit for MBA the US , will land there in a few months. How about you?”

“I work for Infosys, and want to do masters sometime”

“That’s good. You need to study further”

“Tell me something about Bombay and your childhood”

“Well sure. We lived in a colony where we were a gang of 12. Krishna, Ram and I were very close. In fact Ram works in Chennai, said he will meet us today but I haven’t told him that am with you. Let’s surprise him.”

“Hmm… Sure”

“Well anyway, we had a blast as kids. We did all sorts of weird things………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

………………………………………………………………………………….. And then we grew older, went to different cities to do our graduation and never had the same fun again”

“You guys must have met often”

“Not Ram but yea Krish would come every month; He loves his mom and can’t stay away from her. He is so sweet. He would often take his mom on dates. Krishna, his mom and I would go to the beach and spend hours talking. His mom loves me like her own daughter and my mom thinks Krish is the perfect guy”

“That’s sweet (skeptically)”

Just then Amrutha’s phone rings.

“Hi Ram, yea I am in barista, the Anna nagar branch, do you know the place? Super”

“Does he know the place?”

“He says he does let’s see”

“So Trish, that’s what Krish calls you right? He has told me a lot about you. He calls me every week.”

“Hopefully nice things”

“Yea, lots of nice things.

“Hmmm..”

“So Trish, are you excited about tomorrow?”

“Well yea, also nervous”

“I understand your going to meet him for the first time. Don’t worry he is a good looking and really nice”

“Hmmm…..”

“What time are you going to get to the airport?”

“11:30 should do, Have to check with my dad”

“Cool. I am excited as well, going to meet Krish after almost 5 and half years”

“But I thought he came down in between?”

“I couldn’t meet him then and anyway he came for 3 weeks and literally spent every second with his mom. Loves him mom like crazy”

“Oh cool”

“Trisha if you don’t mind can I ask you a question?”

“Sure”

“You wear jeans and stuff right??”

“Huh??”

“Well Mrs. Anand said you wear a salwar or a saree every time and I was just wondering, that’s all”

“Yea I do, when I go out with my friends”

“If you need any help with clothes or make up or anything else call me. I can see you are not wearing any make up now”

“Ok (skeptically)”

“I didn’t mean to offend you, just that Mrs. Anand was worried if you will fit into the American life style and wanted me to help you”

“Sorry If I sound rude but these things are my personal choice and I don’t really think you should interfere”

“Sorry Trish, Krish was also wondering if you wear pants and stuff coz he wanted to get you something but was not sure if you will use it”

“Amrutha, Krish should ask me and not discuss me behind my back”

“He didn’t Trish; it was just a normal conversation”

“Let’s leave it at this please”

Trisha wonders. What is wrong with everybody? I wear salwars because my mom wants me to look traditional in front of my in-laws. Who wears make up to RMKV?? Do I look like a “naatu-kattai”? Krish should have asked me first and not discussed me.

Just then Trish hears a loud voice.

“Hey KUKU, it’s so good to see you”

‘Hey Ram, super to see you”

“KuKu what’s going on? Krish is getting married to someone else. Why aren’t you and Krish getting married? “

“Ram shut up. Meet Trisha, Krishna’s fiancée”

“Shit”

Ram looks flabbergasted.
